Flashes of life in Guam: Bassie's graduation plus singing plus art show

Bassie graduated from 3 years of Montessori education together with 7 other students. The party was outside and everything was decorated island style.

Bassie is afgestudeerd. 3 jaar ging hij samen met 7 andere kindjes naar de Montessori school. Het feest was buiten en alles was versierd op zijn Guams (eiland stijl).

The kids all sang a few songs for the parents. Penny has been their music teacher for 3 years now and I was really proud of her that she teached the kids the Beethoven song ‘Ode to joy’.

De kinderen zongen liedjes voor de ouders. Penny gaf 3 jaar muziek op school en ik was zo trots op haar wanneer ze de kinderen het Beethoven liedjes ‘Ode to joy’ liet zingen.

Then they all got a award for something they were good at. Bas is very good at math and he got a award for a game they do at school were you need to use your math. So far he never made a mistake (and he really hates making mistakes that why he likes math so much I guess). After that they got their graduation certification. It was really fun!

Dan kregen ze allemaal een prijs voor iets waar ze goed in waren. Bas is heel goed in wiskunde en kreeg een prijs voor een spel dat ze goen op school waarbij ze wiskunde moeten gebruiken. Tot nog toe maakte hij geen enkele fout, daarom vind hij wiskunde zo fijn denk ik, want Bas houdt er niet van om fouten te maken. Nadien kregen ze hun afstudeer certificaat. Het was echt leuk!

After that we opened the art show. I have been an volunteer art teacher for a year and I was so proud of what the kids created. The team was ocean life. After learning them some techniques we started some projects.

Nadien openden we de kunst gallerij. Dit jaar was ik een vrijwillige kunst lerares en ik was zo trots op de kindjes. Het was allemaal zo mooi en creatief! Het thema was oceaan leven. Na hen wat technieken geleerd te hebben startten we wat projecten.

The first was a mural project with the whole class. It was so much fun doing this, every week we saw the progress, and the last thing we did was adding Guam in the middle (symbolizing the 2 oceans). We glued real sand and every child added a shell in the town they life. This project was mainly done by elementary one and two (1 student), the preschool kids helped with the ocean (so they learned about different values). The paint we used is acrylic paint, the wood is all scrap wood we recycled from a theater.

Het eerste procjet was een muurschildering met de hele klas. Het was echt fijn, elke week zagen we vooruitgang, en op het einde voegden we Guam in het midden toe, want die is immers omringd door 2 oceanen. We plakten echt zand langs de rand en de kindjes plakten een schlep waar ze woonden. Het project werd vooral volbracht door de kinderen van basisschool 1 (Bas en nog 9 andere kinderen) en 2 (1 student), de kinderen van de lagere school deden stukjes van de zee (en gebruikten verschillende tinten van blauw, en mixten het zelf). De verf die ze gebruikten is acrylic verf, het hout is zijn allemaal overschotjes van een theater.

The preschool kids had another project (for 3 weeks. First the ocean, then fishes (just colors) and then the background. The background needed to contrast and it was so funny after talking about it with the kids for a while, Minami saw the perfect color, the orange. It was so beautiful and fun, while they did the background they were taking about sunsets, amazing!

De kinderen van de lagere school hadden een ander project. Eerst de zee, dan de vissen (gewoon kleuren) en dan de achtergrond. De achtergrond moest contrasteren en de kinderen hadden ere en hele dicussie over tot Minami heeft overtuigend oranje aanwees. En iedereen vond dat ok. Het zo mooi en plezant om hen bezig te zien, aan het praten over zonszondergangen terwijl ze het schilderden.
