Boys play

Bas loves to play and pretend Sea Shepherd in the sand box. For those who don’t know, they are very know because of their actions to protect whales. http://www.seashepherd.org/ (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.)

When I was little I wanted to be in every organization that protected animals. I was a member of so many of them. So I’m very happy Bas likes it too.

I wanted to do this post to put some thoughts down. Recently I have been reading a lot about boys play. They say it is important to let them be boys. Indeed, I let them wrestle, scream, climb trees, do (a bit of) dangerous things (watching them closely), play pirate with stinky bombs, but I tried to avoid guns in his play world. Everybody said it would not work because they all play with them. But funny enough, when I thought it was time to explain about it he understood, and he tells his friends not to shoot or to play army. He does kind of like to play and pretend good and bad guys, but he does it with his boots that save dolphins. It fits very well with his personality. I’m so proud of him respecting my thoughts and that he carries them in his own hart and so touched that he is so peaceful.

  1. I only recently learnt about the sea shepherds...they are a very dedicated bunch indeed with lots of Kiwis! Bas and Emily were throwing stink bombs yesterday at the beach...I'm not sure what/who at (I was busy with Anna and keeping an eye on Ekko) but it all fizzled out pretty quickly and then later they were playing that beautiful shop game. I think they have a strong sense of right and wrong that can only come their heart, and of course a safe and gentle home life :)

  2. It's so nice to see you instilling such good acts of kindness in your children and watch them follow in your footsteps. Such a sweet boy, Bassie is. And a FANTASTIC artist! How very focused and talented he is!
